RETURN POLICY ON THREAD: Like most needlework retailers, we do not allow returns on thread except when there has been an error on our part. Please keep this in mind before you buy. When in doubt, we recommend you buy and test a small amount prior to ordering larger quantities. There are many reasons for this, but a primary reason is that once the thread has left our store, we can no longer verify that it has been kept clean and unused, and in most cases, we can no longer tell which dye lot a given thread came from. Therefore you can be confident that the thread you buy from us is clean, unused, and that we can send you multiple skeins from a single dye lot when that is important. If you buy thread from a company that accepts returned thread, how do you know where the thread they sell you has been before it gets to you?

CONVERTING THREAD: From time to time we get requests to convert thread from one brand to another or one type to another. This can be an extremely difficult and time-consuming task and we regret that we are no longer able to offer this service.

Cotton thread is probably the most commonly used and available embroidery thread today. It is versatile, coming in a number of finishes, both shiny and matte, and a number of weights. It is a staple of a needleworker's repertoire.

DMC SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS (stranded cotton) comes in 8.7 yard (8 meter) skeins in 489 solid and 18 variegated colors. There used to be more variegated colors but several of them were eliminated in 2002 and we are now sold out of all discontinued variegated colors. DMC has chosen not to make actual thread color cards available to stores, only printed ones (which are not as accurate as actual thread color cards). Because of this, we no longer stock the printed color cards. You may be able to get actual thread color cards directly from DMC, at least in the US. Effective June 1, 2022 our DMC floss will be 79¢ per skein (20% below the suggested retail price of 99¢).-->

Anchor multicolor embroidery floss used to come in size 5 pearl as well. We can no longer get it in pearl cotton OR floss and have only some floss left (but most colors are sold out).

DMC PEARL COTTON is used for hardanger embroidery, pulled thread, cross stitch, needlepoint, etc. Please refer to the DMC floss color card to determine which colors are available in which sizes.

ANCHOR PEARL COTTON used to be available to us in size 3, 5, 8 and 12. All pearl cotton production is now discontinued by Anchor and we will not be able to get more when we sell out of colors. We still have a small amount of size 3 colors and size 12 colors and a better supply of size 5 and 8. DMC "Coloris" is yet another of their "variegated" cotton floss products. They are not that different in concept than Color Variations floss, except that none of the Coloris colors are monochromatic variegated; all will have more than one type of color in a skein (supposedly there are 4 colors per skein but some do have fewer than four distinct colors, unless you count lighter and darker shades of a color as separate colors). In general color combinations are very different than what you typically would find in hand-dyed threads and even other non-hand-dyed "variegated" threads. These are the availabile colors:

GENTLE ART OVERDYED FLOSS (also known as Sampler Threads and sometimes abbreviated GAST) is overdyed floss from yet another company. Some of the colors are also called "Simply Shaker" but most people including designers do not distinguish between regular Gentle Art colors and Simply Shaker colors so we just list them all together. The colors have been developed with samplers in mind, and tend to be more monochromatic and subtle than some other overdyed flosses. No color cards are available, and dye lots vary considerably. The manufacturer currently offers these in 5 and 10 yard skeins, but we normally stock them only in the 5 yard skeins. Colors are:

WATERCOLOURS by Caron is a beautiful hand-painted thread with multiple colors along a continuous-length thread. Watercolours is a 100% cotton 3-ply divisible thread (one ply is about the size of #5 pearl cotton). Use on canvas, for hardanger embroidery, etc. BE SURE TO BUY ENOUGH THREAD IN ONE DYE-LOT TO COMPLETE YOUR PROJECT DUE TO DYE LOT VARIATIONS. Currently available colors are:

WILDFLOWERS by Caron is a fine-weight cotton thread (sized between 8 and 12 pearl cotton) that comes in ALL THE SAME COLORS AS WATERCOLOURS (see color listing above under Watercolours). Use for hardanger, cross-stitch, canvas embroidery, etc.

DANISH FLOWER THREAD is the original Flower Thread. Produced by the Danish Handcraft Guild, this matte finish cotton thread has been dyed to simulate the colors produced with natural vegetable dyes. One strand is approximately equivalent in size to two strands of cotton floss. Colors not listed below are newer colors we have not yet added due to low demand. Colors available from us are:

Note: Dye lots can vary considerably so be sure to buy enough for your project. In 1996 the skein yardage was reduced from 39 to 22 yards per skein.

DMC FLOWER THREAD was similar to Danish Flower Thread, except the color palette was similar to that of DMC cotton floss. Originally 180 colors were available. In December 31, 1999 DMC Flower Thread was discontinued by DMC. We now have sold all remaining DMC flower thread.

DMC MATTE EMBROIDERY COTTON (also known in French as "Retors Mat" or Article 89) is a soft, heavy, matte finish cotton which is no longer available in the US.

DMC FLOCHE is a silky, loose-twist cotton thread typically used for cutwork embroidery. There are currently 92 colors available, most of which coordinate with DMC floss numbers.

DMC BRODER SPECIAL (also known as "Brilliant Cutwork & Embroidery Thread") is used for cutwork, for eastern European embroidery, and is wonderful on canvas. Discontinued in the US many years ago, we now once again have it back in stock but currently only in 5200 bright white, regular white, and 310 black (black available only in size 16, 20 and 25). Size 12 is no longer being made, but we do have this in sizes 16, 20, 25 and 30. DMC Broder Special is $1.35 per skein.

DMC TATTING COTTON is a 6-cord size 80 thread which used to come in 106 yard balls in 51 solid colors, plus 25 variegated colors. DMC announced in late 2018 that tatting thread and crochet thread will no longer be part of their US product line. By now we have sold out of the vast majority of colors.

DMC CORDONNET SPECIAL is a tightly twisted 6-cord crochet thread which is also used for pulled thread, lacemaking, etc. Available in white and ecru only - PLEASE SPECIFY BOTH SIZE AND COLOR. DMC announced in late 2018 that cordonnet will no longer be part of the US product line so our supply is limited and can't be restocked once sold. We are currently sold out of white size 30, 60, 70, 80 and 100.
